The packed concert hall was far from silent. People whispered to their neighbors, fancy clothing rustled, jewelry chimed. In the wings, William Reis waited, the sound of his rapidly thumping heart filling his ears.

Kate O’Connor was born in Virginia in 1982. She graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University-Prescott in 2009 and now lives in the New York area. She has been writing science fiction and fantasy since 2011. Her work has most recently appeared in Orson Scott Card’s InterGalactic Medicine Show, Daily Science Fiction, and Escape Pod. In between telling stories, she flies airplanes, works as an archaeology field tech, and manages a kennel full of Airedales.

Marc Levinthal is a writer and musician who has lived and worked in the Los Angeles area for over thirty years. Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, he moved to L.A. in the early eighties to become a rock star. That didn’t quite happen as planned, but a lot of other cool stuff did. He has been involved with both “The Music Business” (having co-written the hit single “Three Little Pigs” while in the band Green Jello) and “The Motion Picture Industry” (having co-written the score for the cult movie classic “Valley Girl.”)

Marc’s short stories have appeared in Aboriginal Science Fiction, The Magazine of Bizarro Fiction, and several anthologies, including Mondo Zombie and Amazing Stories of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.A novel co-written with John Skipp, “The Emerald Burrito of Oz,” was published by Eraserhead Press in 2010. (Several sequels are in the works!)

Marc currently lives in Pasadena with his two lovely nerd children, somewhere between JPL and Mount Wilson.

Short Fiction: “The Ballad of Sophie Nu” and “Potential” by Mark Lawrence

Mark Lawrence is married with four children, one of whom is severely disabled. His day job is as a research scientist focused on various rather intractable problems in the field of artificial intelligence. He has held secret level clearance with both US and UK governments. At one point he was qualified to say ‘this isn’t rocket science … oh wait, it actually is’.

Between work and caring for his disabled child, Mark spends his time writing, playing computer games, tending an allotment, brewing beer, and avoiding DIY.

He has four books in print. The Broken Empire trilogy is complete and begins with Prince of Thorns. The Red Queen’s War trilogy opens with Prince of Fools.

Anne-Marie Czajkowski studied voice as a postgraduate at the Royal College of Music and recently completed her MMus (distinction) in Applied Psychology of Music majoring in singing educationand performance at the University of Leeds. She has performed at ENO, for WNO and various other opera companies, sung on TV and radio and taught voice professionally for 15 years. Notable student successes have been Rebecca Newman (UK No1 Classical Charts, October 2014) and Laura Marling (Best Female Solo Artist, Brit Awards, 2011). She currently teaches voice privately and on the BTec Performing Arts course at Huddersfield. She also enjoys reading fantasy books, mindfulness and archery.
